Course Policy

This is NOT A SELF-PACED CLASS.  You must meet all deadlines listed on your syllabus, although you may turn assignments in early.  If you miss any of the deadlines listed on the syllabus, you will have difficulty successfully completing the course.

The class is conducted in a virtual classroom.  Canvas is the learning management system that provides the virtual classroom for communication between professor and students and for accessing class materials and assignments.  Students MUST use Canvas to send e-mails to the professor and all module assignments.  Assignments sent any other way will NOT be accepted.  Be sure to follow the instructions on the Module Instruction sheet.  The exams are taken through the Canvas learning management system.  Your score will be recorded in the Canvas grade book.  Refer to the Canvas grade book for your accurate daily.

Module Assignments, Discussions, and exams are not accepted late.  A zero will be given if they are not submitted on time.  Only under extreme circumstances and upon the discretion of the professor, will an exception be permitted.  Documentation will be required.

The final grade will be issued at the end of the term on the date required by the college. All rules and academic regulations of the college are applicable to distance learners.

CANVAS

Canvas is a learning management system that is used for much of this course, including for e-mail communication, discussion posts, grade recording, delivery of most course content, and requesting instructor help. The Getting Started guide, the Canvas Student Quickstart guide, and the comprehensive Canvas Student Guide can all be found by clicking on the Help link in the upper-right corner of the Canvas window and selecting "Search the Canvas Guides". You should refer to these guides when you need help using a Canvas feature.

Canvas ADA Statement: Canvas provides a user experience that is easy, simple, and intuitive. Special attention has been paid to making Canvas screen-readable. The Rich Content Editor encourages users to create universally accessible content. Canvas is designed to allow limited customization of colors and schemes to be accessible for all users. The National Federation of the Blind granted Canvas the Gold Level Web Certification in 2010.

Time Required

A minimum expectation is that for every hour spent “in class,” as defined by your instructor, you should plan to spend at least two hours “out of class” in preparation. Your instructor or the class may require additional time. More important than how MUCH should someone study is HOW should someone study. Studying is a skill, and if students have not developed that skill, they may still struggle regardless of how much time they study.  More information about study skills including time management techniques can be found at: http://ola2.aacc.edu/vc/timemanagement/TimeManagementWebShop/ (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.)

Module Lab Assignment Policy

Module assignments are a total of 60% of the course grade.  Exercises are broken down into 11 separate Module labs.  All assignments are due by the dates indicated and on the Course Schedule.   To see the schedule, click on the Canvas CTA 100 home page and click on the Syllabus link located within the Navigation Pane.  Or, click on the Calendar to view the due dates of the assignments.

Late assignments are not accepted after 11:59 p.m. of the due date.

Incomplete assignments will receive partial credit.  Once an assignment is turned in, it will be graded and you won’t be able to resubmit the lab unless stated by the professor.  If an assignment is submitted without the file being attached in the submittal and your instructor has to notify a student, that student may only resubmit the assignment one additional time throughout the semester.  Otherwise the submittal will be a zero if the folder is not attached.  Always double-check your lab submittals in your Send folder.

Assignments are meant to reinforce what you have learned in the chapter and should not be considered a substitute for the chapter reading/tutorial.  The assignments in CTA 100 are designed to allow all students time to complete them by the deadline.

Having Trouble with the Work:  I'll rely on you to let me know when you need help.  You may ask for all the help you need to help you understand the features while doing your labs.  I have office hours at various times of the week to benefit all students.  Please do contact me if you are having trouble.  It is not worth getting frustrated.

Please note that you are required to do your own work.  Your instructor will only provide guidance or suggestions to help you.  Also, note that copying or having someone else do your work is not permitted.   Doing work together and sending the same work is also not permitted.  Although you are encouraged to ask each other questions pertaining to the lab work, you must do your own work individually.  A zero will be given for the assignment if it is the first incident.  The second incident will be a failure of the course.

Once you turn the lab in, you cannot redo and resubmit any part of the lab to be re-graded.

Module Assignments (Rubrics)

Module Assignment evaluations will be based on the point values indicated on the Lab Rubric at the end of the Lab Assignment that can be accessed through the "Module” link located on the CTA 100 home page in Canvas.  The evaluation considers how well directions were followed and how accurate and complete the assignment is.  Work will be graded after the due date of the assignment. This policy allows the professor to be consistent with the grading.  The Evaluation Rubrics will be sent no later than 1-week after the assignment due date through the Assignment Submission.   The evaluation contains important comments and feedback regarding your lab exercises, so please be sure you read it.

Exams

The exams are worth a total of 30% of your overall score for the course.  The exams will consist of two parts:  conceptual and hands-on projects.  The exams will be taken within the Canvas learning management system.  The structure of the timed conceptual portion are multiple choice, true/false, and matching.  You will be taking these exams online and may use your textbook and study guides as a reference.  The hands-on portion consists of completing a hands-on Access project.  Because the conceptual portion of the exam will be timed, if you open the exam, you must complete it.  The exam can only be taken once. If you miss an exam, you cannot make up the exam.  A zero will be given for the exam.

Help Discussion Forums (Canvas)

Please check the CTA 100 Canvas home page at least twice a week to see if there are any Discussions posted.  Messages posted to the Canvas Discussion Forums are public, which means that the professor and all class members will be able to view them.  The professor will use this feature to make general announcements and to make comments to the entire class as well as on the home page.

Students are encouraged to use the Discussion Forums under the Ask a Question Discussion folder to post general questions regarding problems they are having on the labs.  Although your professor responds quickly to your e-mail questions, you may get an even faster response from a classmate on the Discussion Forums.  Also, chances are if one student is having a problem on an exercise, there are others having the same problem.  The Discussion Forums can serve as a great resource for solving problems.  If you post a question regarding an exercise, use the chapter and exercise number as the subject so everyone can see the specific reference.

Please keep in mind that the Discussion Forum is a tool that is available to you.  Please do not abuse this feature or it will have to be disabled by the professor.

Instructor Response Policy:  Students will receive a response to e-mails from their instructor within two business days (Monday – Friday).

Module Group Discussion/ Attendance Policy

Each student is expected to communicate with the professor once a week through the Module Group Discussion Forum to answer a question that the professor posts. Group Discussion are 10% of your course grade.

Attendance is taken based on your discussion (Monday through Sunday).  This record is what will be used to determine your attendance reporting to the Registrar’s Office.  If you do not check in and do not submit lab work, you will be marked absent with the Registrar and that could jeopardize any financial aid or veteran assistance you may have.  Please remember to post your discussion each week.

Makeup Policy

Module Assignments and exams are not accepted late.  A zero will be given if not submitted on time.  Only upon the discretion of the professor along with appropriate documentation will an exception to this rule be granted.
